SHE28: Empowering Women. Period.

Most women can relate to that wonderful time of the month where we're made so aware of our womanhood.  Many of us have that oh-so-embarrassing story where we wore white pants on the wrong day or had to purchase our pads or tampons for the first time from a male cashier. It's part of growing up - a rites of passage of sorts, right?

For many women in developing countries, that one week out of the month is more than just a slight inconvenience.  Since they lack access to affordable maxi pads, they are forced to miss school or work.  No work more times than not means no pay in a developing country.  And for many of these ladies, even losing out one day's salary can be detrimental to their families' livelihood.  Think of this the next time you purchase a package of your trusted brand at your local drug store - imported brands often cost more than a single days wage. The alternatives - cloth rags, bark, or mud - don't prevent leakage and can often put them at risk for serious reproductive health issues when you consider they often lack a clean water supply.

Sustainable Health Enterprises  (SHE) is a social venture on a mission to invest in people and ideas that are most often overlooked and considered taboo as vehicles of social and economic change. The SHE28 campaign is its initiative to address this pertinent, but often silent, issue with an innovative product design and economic opportunities for women and their communities.  (Some divas with a serious purpose!!!)

SHE is coupling its LaunchPad with a sustainable business model that will create economic opportunities all across the value chain – from the banana farmers who will sell their banana fiber to SHE to the women entrepreneurs that will be equipped with business skills training and education to sell the LaunchPads in their communities. For every women-led and operated business that SHE invests in, approximately 100 jobs are created and approximately 100,000 girls and women have access to affordable menstrual pads.

They have developed an patent-pending, low-cost, and eco-friendly menstrual pad, the SHE LaunchPad, that makes an absorbent core (the highest material cost driver) for pads from agro-waste (banana fibers) without using any chemicals or super absorbent polymers. The SHE28 campaign launched in Rwanda in 2009, and girls and women, will now have access to a menstrual product that will be priced at 5 cents per pad!

I love that SHE is, also,  dedicated to instigating change with its education and advocacy programs. Educate the people and you empower the people! SHE is currently in talks with Rwandan Ministry officials to ensure menstrual hygiene education is widely available across all government primary schools.

How can you help?
  1. Give $28. Support SHE.
  2. Break the silence and go viral — share the SHE28 campaign video found on YouTube
  3. Follow SHE on its website and blog or find them on Twitter and Facebook.
  4. Share your voice - Retweet this on Twitter

Helping the Hungry this Holiday Season

Test Your Hunger IQ
Often when emergency situations and disasters strike and we're inclined to help or donate, one of the first items that often comes to mind seems to be food.  Hunger is a real issue in the world.  In areas that are already devastated with poverty, a natural disaster can be a death sentence for its residence.  To me, that's a scary thought.  I often look at how much my family wastes and am reminded of those warnings every mom seemed to give their child who refused to eat peas.  You know - "the starving kids in Africa" speech.  As an adult, I realize that wasn't her just talking to talk, but that there are truly children and adults that would love to have a portion of the food we toss aside or take for granted from time-to-time.

The World Food Programme is the food arm of the United Nations system. Its focus is on eradicating hunger and poverty.  What seems like a little to us when compared to our regular monthly food budget, can go a long way with The World Food Programme and their initiatives to help feed families across the world:

• $35 provides nutritious food for 2 weeks
• $75 provides food for 1 month
• $150 provides food for the next 2 months

Hunger is actually the worst weapon of mass destruction. It claims millions of victims each year."
~  Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva,
President of Brazil

This holiday season, donations made can provide life-saving food for families facing the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in Haiti, refugees fleeing conflict in Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and mothers struggling to feed their kids due to drought in Somalia.

Don't have it to give at this time? Don't fret! There are ways to spread the word about their initiatives and still help to feed those impacted by hunger and poverty.

Play Freerice and feed the hungry

Spills, Spills and More Spills..the Holidays are Here!

It's inevitable in my household. No matter how often I tell my children to keep their food and drinks in the kitchen or to take their shoes off before coming in from the backyard - something gets spilled somewhere on a very regular basis.  My niece and nephew have been spending the week with us and in the last 48 hours alone there have been at least 5 messes involving grape juice, gum, mud pies, eye shadow and brown gravy.  I'm sure I'll find a few more once everyone clears out of here.

While searching the web for some simple and inexpensive remedies to help spruce up my carpets and couches I came across a very informative site.  I love that many companies are now adding useful information to their sites to help consumers like me that want to be informed and, possibly, correct easy problems myself.

GreenChoice Carpet Cleaning's site does just that. They have a blog dedicated to different upholstery-related issues.  As a consumer, that shows that they are interested in empowering their customers with information and not just coming in to clean up messes and make a quick buck.  So, if any of my in-need-of upholstery cleaning VA readers want to check out this company - it appears to be one that puts an emphasis on customer service and retention.

Would love to hear your thoughts...

Are you more inclined to use and recommend a company that provides
useful information to their consumers to fix small problems themselves?

#26ActsofKindness : I'm In

Many of us are still emotionally reeling from the events in Newtown, Connecticut. The holiday season is typically a time of year where we're inspired to give more and "pay it forward". This holiday season the need seems to be greater.  When reflecting on the senseless act and the feelings of hopelessness when reading or watching news accounts, you just want to do something.

Honestly, I've had to remove myself from the social media focus on Newtown, but I'm aware that those directly impacted do not have that capability. That breaks my heart! There are young, innocent children whose lives will never be the same.  Families that are devastated.  This one act will affect generations to come.

I'm choosing to focus on the 26 lives and the legacy that they will leave.  Ann Curry from NBC News has inspired a movement focused on giving in their honor:
Newtown's heartbreak has a lot of us asking, "What can I do?" Thinking about this, I took to Twitter and asked people to imagine what would happen if all of us committed to 20 acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown. I added, "I'm in. If you are, RT #20Acts." ~ Ann Curry (Inspired to act: #26Acts of kindness to honor those lost in Newtown, Conn.)

My oldest son is in middle school so I had to have a discussion with him earlier this week to discuss what conversations he may have had at school with his friends and seen on television or online.  That kid truly never ceases to amaze me when it comes to his compassion and concern for others.

When I discussed the #26ActsOfKindness Movement and ways we could participate, he came up with the following ways (one to impact our community and one to impact Sandy Hook Elementary:

~ give 26 random people a candy bar wrapped with an encouraging quote saying happy holidays and to be more thankful and helpful to others (I think he has an ulterior motive to get me to buy candy, but I'll let that one slide for this cause)

~ collect $26 over his winter break to send to Sandy Hook Elementary's PTA with 26 signatures on a card giving them well-wishes and encouragement

We're in, are you?

DWP Challenge # 9: Source of Inspiration

Is there someone in your life that truly made a difference? They stepped in when everyone else seemed to step out? They took the time to truly listen and help you through a difficult time? Or perhaps the way they handled their own personal struggles caused you to persevere and keep pushing forward?

Today's challenge is to take the time to write a letter (not an email, but a real pen to the paper letter) to someone who has made a difference in their life. Let them know what they did and how it impacted you for the better.  Let them know that they sparked something in you to keep pushing onward and upward.

Once you've written it mail it and strive to be that same influence in someone else's life.

Who would you write your letter to? Why?

My @SodaStreamUSA Get Together

I have a pretty awesome group of friends! We support one another, motivate one another, and are just great to be around.

Earlier this month we got together for our Family Holiday Get-Together and we had a chance to try out a SodaStream courtesy of House Party's SodaStream Fizz the Season 2. As a hostess I received a FREE SodaStream to try out and use at our party.

It was pretty easy to put together and my oldest son designated himself the "official taste tester" of the evening. Overall, the kids loved it and many had already been asking their parents for one.

He gave it 2 thumbs up and enjoyed coming up with drink combinations throughout the night.  The kids loved that they could make their drinks as "fizzy" as they wanted with the 3 different levels of carbonation.  As a budget savvy parent, I'm going to enjoy the overall savings. The average cost of a "can" of soda using SodaStream is a quarter! Best in my book is that we're just making what we're going to use.  I don't know about your household, but if there's soda in our fridge - it's going to get guzzled...very, very, very quickly. We've had fun making fizzy drinks with healthy juice alternatives.

Overall, SodaStream is a hit in our house.  Flavor-wise, everyone is good with the taste when compared to some of the name-brand equivalents. It's compact and easy to store - another plus because space is definitely limited in my kitchen.

~~ Happy Holidays Divas!
Take time to enjoy your loved ones and remember the true reason for this season!~~

Doing Our Part When Tragedy Hits

My heart is heavy this morning. As I lay here in my favorite spot on the couch - which is, also, everyone else's favorite spot for some reason - with my one year old cuddled up next to me and my four year old curled at my feet watching Saturday morning cartoons, my mind goes to the parents, families and friends in grief, shock and disbelief over the tragedies at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

My social media threads are filled with people seemingly far removed from this tragedy but connected as parents, as educators, as family, as caring human beings.  Just typing these words has me tearing up because when something like this happens - it's a glaring reminder that our lives can be changed so quickly by something we have no control over.  A reminder that those we love and protect and cherish can be taken away by the senseless actions of someone else.

Reach out to those that you love.  Remember that we never know when it's going to be the last time we see their face or hear their voice.

If you have children in your lives and homes, please be mindful and careful of what you say and how you say it.  They pick up on so much and internalize it in ways we often don't even notice.

Do something kind. Be a blessing to someone - no matter how small or insignificant the gesture may seem.  Leave a kind note on a napkin telling your server how great they were and that you hope they have a fantastic week.  During the holiday season, so many seem to already be on an emotional roller-coaster.  Make someone smile and lift their spirits.

Volunteer to help others and give back to your community.  You don't have to journey to the area impacted by these tragedies to make a difference.  Start in your own backyard and lend a hand to those right around you.

Sadly, nothing we say or do will change what happened yesterday.  Over the days, weeks, months and years - many will struggle to come to terms with the loss and devastation.  My thoughts and prayers are with them.
We can make changes within ourselves and our communities to care more, share more, and give more.

DWP Challenge Day 8: Listening and Hearing

Active Listening - a communication skill that requires the listener to comprehend, interpret and reflect on what they are hearing usually by para- or re-phrasing to the speaker to ensure comprehension

Listening is one thing - but hearing is a totally different skill. How often do you find yourself overtalking the person you're having a conversation with? Or planning your response while their talking and often missing out on key facts and information?
One of my biggest pet peeves is when I'm talking to someone and they interrupt with what they "think" I'm trying to say or answering the question I've yet to ask because they believe they know what I'm going to say based on the first few words in my sentence.
Good communication is a two-way street. Being able effectively get your point across and being capable of listening and interpreting what is being said.
Today's challenge was to spend more time listening to what others were saying and less time talking. How difficult was that for you? Often, it's human nature to want to jump in with our opinions or own experiences.

Image from HREA.ORG

Active listeners often:

~ face their speaker directly and give their undivided attention (I'm bad at this - especially at work when I'm interrupted while doing something else)

~ Minimize internal and external distractions

~ Keep an open mind and don't assume they know what the speaker is going to say

~ Focus on what they speaker is saying and not plan how they are going to respond while they are supposed to be listening

~ Refrain from turning the conversation back to them or their experiences by sharing similar experiences or how they would react in a situation (unless specifically asked for their opinions/reactions)

~ Hear the speaker out and respond accordingly - even if it feels as though they are being personally attacked - often by listening and asking specific, pertinent questions you can diffuse many situations.

Which active listening technique do you need to work on the most?
How do you feel when the person you are speaking to is NOT a good active listener?

netTALK DUO Review

Earlier this month I got this fun package delivered to me. We cut the cord on having a home phone over 2 years ago, but I have been contemplating getting a line installed as a back-up to our cell phones.  Also, it's great to have when we have a sitter on those rare date nights so we're not relying on their cell phone.

The netTALK DUO is an affordable alternative, in my opinion.  If you already have Internet at home, then this can be a great addition.  Currently the WiFi version is only $64.95 plus tax and includes 1 year of service - that's only $5.41 a month for the first year.  Each additional year is $29.95 plus tax which breaks down to approximately $2.50 a month!

My favorite features:
~Local and long distance calls in the US and Canada are included
~Call waiting, forwarding and Caller ID
~Visual voicemail using their online management system
~3 way and conference calling
~Portable - use anywhere you can get an Internet connection!
~The affordability

My husband used something similar when he was in the military and would deploy often.  He was able to keep a steady phone number and plug into an Internet connection no matter where he was in the world.  This plan is much more affordable then what we used 5-7 years ago.

Not-So-Pros:
~ Set-up took a little longer than anticipated. It could have been my Internet connection but I did have to reboot my connection a few times.
~If your Internet connection is having issues, then your call quality will not be the best.

Gift of Communication Freedom Promotion
(Available with devices purchased by 12/25/12 and registered by 12/31/12)

Free $10 International Credit with the purchase of ANY DUO Device

DWP Challenge: Week 2

Week 2 of the DWP Challenge kicks off tomorrow!!!

Our focus is going to be active listening - something that is difficult for many, including myself! The goal is to spend the day listening more than speaking. True listening where you are taking in what others are saying and not just waiting for an opportunity to have your say. We'll recap here on the blog and over on Facebook to see how it went. Good luck!

Also, I'm currently soliciting volunteers to be a part of The Divatude Chronicles that will kick off on January 1st.  Do you have a story to share? Are you driven, inspired, victorious, and/or called-to-action? Are you still working on getting all your stuff together but still pushing forward despite the obstacles? Did you persevere despite challenges and setbacks and can now say "I did that"? I'd love to share your story and help motivate and inspire others. Please email me at divaswithpurpose@gmail.com if you'd like to participate.

Here's a recap of the first 7 challenges:

Challenge 1: Write Personal Mission Statement

Challenge 2: Rather than criticize, coach. Motivate with positive feedback and influence.

Challenge 3: Do something nice for someone else - leave a soda money by the vending machine, pay for someone's coffee, let that extra car turn during your morning or afternoon commute, etc

Challenge 4: Focus on the positive all day. No negative thoughts. (Warning - often when you make a conscious effort to be positive, it will seem as though anything and everything that can go wrong will - keep smiling and stay positive through it all).

Challenge 5: Connect with at least 4 other people and commit to motivating and inspiring one another for the next 5 days. It doesn't have to be anything ornate - just a simple motivating text, email, Facebook post, etc.

Challenge 6: Have a selfish moment. Do something for yourself.

Challenge 7: Share lessons from your successes and failures with someone that can benefit from it.

Secret Santas

I love the holidays! I love Christmas music, the crowds, making lists, and gift exchanges! Especially gift exchanges among my circle of friends. This year, I did something different and participated in a blogger Secret Santa exchange. It was a chance to "meet" someone new and do something nice for someone else.

Earlier this week, I received the cutest hand-decorated wine glasses from Melissa who blogs over at Life, Love and Dirty Diapers.

I love unique and hand-crafted items like these! Probably because I am no good in the crafts department at all!

My favorite part of the glasses, of course, is the personalization on the base:

Thank you Melissa! I'll think of you as I unwind with my Diva Glasses!

Many thanks to Jessica over at Boys Oh Boys for coordinating this exchange!

Have a fantastic weekend, Divas!

My Review from Goodreads.Com
The Fear of Things to Come by Kathryne Arnold

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It was "uncomfortable" to read at times because I was anticipating what could/should happen. Any book based on the DSM combined with a mentally unbalanced psychopathic sociopath (I'm sure that's pretty redundant...LOL) will keep you on your toes. I'll warn you - this book can be pretty graphic with some of the violence but it's not overboard. The descriptions and scenarios seem to fit the storyline based on the characters. Admittedly, some of the characters irritated me and I found myself wanting to shake them. Overall this was a good read and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Keep Living...Keep Moving...Keep Being

I had a teacher in 6th grade who was a complete God-send. She was one of those teachers that had a tough exterior but once you got to know them they were the sweetest, most sincere and caring individuals you'd ever meet.

I can't recall the exact scenario she used (I believe it was a clock) but she'd give us these regular pep talks regarding life trials. Her words have stuck with me through some rough patches.  We're either going through, coming out or about to go through SOMETHING in our lives.  If we're going through, just hold on a little bit longer and you'll be coming out and can celebrate making it through that storm.  In celebrating, realize that the life lessons you've learned shouldn't be taken for granted and remember that feeling of exuberance when you face another life trial.

I remember going through a really dark period and her words came to mind.  It was probably 10 years or so after I'd been her student but clear as day I could hear her voice telling me to hold on and wait for the next season.

There are times when I get frustrated because I'm not where I thought I'd be when I was all bright-eyed and new to the grown-up world.  However, I'm a true believer that the experiences that we have, the people we encounter, the life we truly live - all that shapes us to be wonderful unique beings that we are.

Happy Wednesday Divas!

The Soon-To-Be Debt-Free Diva

Hey Divas! Hope you're all having a fantastic Tuesday! I wanted to let you all know about my newest venture. Personal finance has been a struggle and fascination of mine for quite some time. While I incorporate budgeting and savings posts here from time-to-time, I really would like to keep those to a minimum and focus more on the inspirational and motivational portion of Divas With A Purpose.

Recently, I began a new blog entitled, The Soon-To-Be Debt-Free Diva! I'm still wheedling down the specifics of which the direction I'll be taking that blog and I would love your input and support over there.  Currently, I'm blogging daily on the series 31 Days to Financial Freedom courtesy of My Pretty Pennies. There are tons of deal savings and coupon blogs but I would like to focus on ways to pay down/off debt and managing personal finances.

I'm by far no expert and will be reaching out to those who are where I'd like to be and have the expertise for interviews, guest posts, etc.  If you have a success or not-so-successful story that you'd like to share, I'd love to hear. You know my motto - you never know how your words, experiences and views may help inspire and motivate someone to make a change or difference.

#FreshmatesClean Review

bk-4I'm a big fan of Charmin products - they're affordable and I can often combine coupon savings and sales to stock up on paper products for my family.

When my 4 year old began potty-training a couple of years ago, I was introduced to Freshmates by a co-worker... love love love them! Let's be honest - kids don't always get themselves the cleanest. I use Freshmates for my youngest and it seems easier for him to clean up with less mess and less paper. That's a win for my laundry and my pipes!

They are flushable, septic safe, and free of drying alcohols. Best when used after your favorite Charmin toilet paper.
"Charmin® Freshmates® are made with just the right amount of moisture so when used with dry toilet paper, the flushable wet wipes give a cleaner clean than dry bath tissue alone. Because you wouldn't bathe with just a dry towel and expect to get clean."

Right now you can enter the Freshmates DIY Bathroom Makeover Sweepstakes for a chance to win $5000 Visa Gift card towards a home bathroom makeover and a $1000 Visa gift card towards a consultation with an interior designer when you upload a photo of where you'd put Charmin Freshmates in your bathroom! There will, also, be 42 daily prize winners of a free 40 count tub of Charmin Freshmates!

Here's a copy of my entry...I "prettied" it up a bit so it wouldn't be too drab but you can't have any people or logos on the pictures that you submit.

~Disclaimer~ I received a free sample of Charmin Freshmates from Vocalpoint.com. I was not required to write this review or share their information. All opinions are thoughts are solely mine and no other compensation was received. Read my full disclosure here~
