DWP Tuesday: New Beginnings

Hello Divas! Happy Tuesday! I hope you're having a fantastic week so far!

For the next few weeks I will be introducing you to some of the bloggers who have connected through the Divas With A Purpose Blogging Circle.  Our first blogger is no stranger to DWP.  Cabrini guest posted back in  September for Women's Friendship Month about her Two Best Friends.

Cabrini shares her experiences and thoughts at New Beginnings.

What is the inspiration behind your blog's name?A couple of years ago I was in an emotionally abusive relationship.  I finally broke free from him.  I did this with the help of counseling and prayer. In the course of going through counseling, I began to open up about a lot of demons that were eating away at my mind, body and soul. Through counseling and a lot of prayer, I began to feel better about myself. I let go of the past and began living in the present and knew I now had a future.  For me, it was a "new beginning."

What is your passion and how do you use that passion to better your family and community?  Why do you do what you do?
My passion is knowledge.  I love to learn and I love to teach others.  I tutor with a literacy program. I teach adults how to read.

Who inspires you?
My grandparents.  I was also close with my mother's parents. My grandpa had a lot of knowledge and wisdom. He died in 2008. He was 97 years old.  I loved talking to him and getting his advice. At his age, he had been through it all. Because of them, I believe in marriage and I believe in love.

My children - I live for them and I always want to be their role models. I never want them to look up to anyone but me so I try to live my life the best way I can to make sure they are always proud of me.  I never want to disappoint them.

What 3 words do you want people to think of when they think of you?
Dedicated, compassionate, sensitive

What projects are you currently undertaking?
I am focusing on attending law school.  I am hoping to either move to Texas or the DMV area.  I would like to practice maritime law.

You can connect with Cabrini at her blog, New Beginnings, or on Twitter:

I'd like to thank Cabrini for her support and friendship! She's definitely an inspiration to me and encourages me through her inspirational posts, her candidness and her drive for attaining her personal goals.

If you know of someone that should be spotlighted on DWP Tuesday, please submit their information here.

If you are a blogger and would like to be considered for the DWP Blogging Circle, please read the requirements and submit your information here.

~~~Blogger Opportunity~~~
It's a great feeling to be a part of something new and unique in the beginning stages....I'm excited about this upcoming opportunity.  I've connected with some awesome bloggers and we've got a great giveaway coming up for the Spring.  Fellow bloggers, feel free to check it out if you're interested!
How would you like to be a part of something TRULY unique and special? This spring, Moms with Voices Media is hosting the ULTIMATE Baby Shower Giveaway, and would love for you to join!
Motivational Monday: Success Story
I love my mother.  She can be so "cute" at times.  I got awakened to a series of text alerts very early this morning.  I didn't bother to read them at the time, because, hey, if it was a real emergency they'd call, right?  Completely forgot about it until just a few minutes ago.  At 5:15 AM, my mother sent me the following:
I have within me all the ingredients for success.
I now allow the success formula to flow through me and manifest in my world.
Whatever I am guided to do will be a success.
I learn from every experience.  I go from success to success and glory to glory.
My pathway is a series of stepping stones to even greater successes.
Well, thank you, Momma!!! This is probably an excerpt from her early morning devotional, but I'm so thankful that she shared it with me (even if it was at Zero Dark 30).  Every now and then we need a little reminder and boost that we're all a success story.  We've all been through something that has taught us life lessons.  Even if we're currently going through a storm, we should walk in victory and claim the success in advance.  I refuse to let an outside source tell me that I will not or cannot attain something that I have my heart set on.  I have all the ingredients for success within my being.  This line of thought should be something we all cling onto and share with those around us - our spouses, our children, our friends, everyone!
Too many times we go through an experience and learn absolutely nothing from it.  We take nothing from it. We don't grow.  We don't mature. Nothing.  But, it's okay...because we're destined to go through that exact same experience again until we come away with the knowledge and growth that is for us to gain.  I don't know about you, but I'd prefer to get it somewhat right the first time around!
Today's one of those days that's very blah and dreary, but in spite of all that - I'm still claiming success and walking in victory.
Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a blessing to others! Encourage someone to be a success story and learn from their experiences as they grow better and better!
Review & Giveaway EVENT!
Book Reviews By MamaLuvsBooks:
This Friday, March 2, 2012, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax is coming out in theaters! In anticipation of this event, I decided it might be fun to review and giveaway some books relating to The Lorax. I figured most people already have a copy of the original story in their homes, so I found these two other great books to share with you! They are BOTH part of the Step Into Reading series which we absolutely LOVE in our home.
(The Lorax Movie COMING SOON!)
Book #1: "Look for the Lorax" (Step 1 Book):
This book is for kids Preschool-Kindergarten aged, it has big type and easy words, rhyme and rhythm, and picture clues. The story is a cute easy read about a nice colorful world with everything healthy and green. The Lorax decides he wants to stay in this place of beauty, and the story rhymes as he sees it along the way. The illustrations are bright and detailed. This is a great book for beginner readers of both genders.
Book #2: "How to Help the Earth - by the Lorax" (Step 3 Book):
This book is for kids in Grades 1-3. The book has engaging characters, easy-to-follow plots, and popular topics. The story teaches kids about where the trash goes after they throw it away, how we can help the Earth by recycling, saving electricity, conserving water, and planting new trees. It's a great first book for kids to teach them about the environment and how to work together as a community to save the Earth! This book also has colorful and detailed illustrations. Boys and girls would both enjoy this book!
Both books are by Tish Rabe and illustrated by Christopher Moroney and Jan Gerardi
THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE STEP INTO READING SERIES:
1. They are fun to read and the kids can read them to YOU
2. They are age appropriate and build on each other
3. Kids LOVE to pick them out at the Book Store
4. They are reasonably priced
5. They relate to the bigger stories and concepts, but break them down into words kids can read at their level
6. My son's favorites are the Star Wars series
7. My daughter LOVED the Fancy Nancy books
We can't wait for this FRIDAY to see The Lorax Movie!!!
Here's How to WIN:
WIN these TWO awesome books in my Book Bonanza giveaway! The more you do on the Rafflecopter the more chances you will have to win! Good Luck!!! Don't forget you can also purchase this wonderful books at Amazon.
SOCS: My Season of Growth
stream of consciousness Sunday
Today's Writing Prompt:
Define the season of your life at this very moment.
Over the past year my life has taken a complete 180 from where I thought I wanted to be. I will admit that I am  happier and more content with where I am. I enjoy the many different roles that I have - wife, mother, daughter, big sister, auntie, friend, mentor, blogger.... I still strive for more though.  There are personal goals that I have set for myself that I haven't attained and had to put on the back burner.  I'm slowly making moves and re-aligning priorities so I can focus on those items again.  I love my family and need to continue to better myself so I can help with providing for them.  My husband is awesome when it comes to being the breadwinner and I truly appreciate all he does for us.  My goal is to be more of a help to him.  I know it's possible and my mind is often working in overdrive with different business ideas and financial plans to help take our family to the next level of greatness.  Throughout it all, I keep prayerful and continue to ask God for guidance and direction. I'm embracing this season of growth and gratitude that I'm in.  I'm loving the wonderful people that are being placed in my life to help mentor and guide me.  Completely surprised but accepting and acknowledging the people that are being led to me for guidance and advice, too.  We are learning and growing together.
This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post hosted by all.things.fadra.  It is 5 minutes of your time and a brain dump.  If you'd like to try it...here are the rules:
~Set a timer and write for 5 minutes
101 in 1001 Check-In #1
Happy Saturday Divas!!! I'm looking forward to a somewhat relaxing and low-key weekend. I have a few things planned, but my number one goal is to finish my laundry that has once again creeped up on us - with 5 people in the house it seems to be a never-ending saga!!!
Today I wanted to do a quick check-in with my 101 in 1001 List. I'm almost a month in and while I haven't completed any of my items, I have started the ball rolling on a few of them:
#25 Once a month send a friend a "just because" box and a note - I've picked the friend for this month...now to compile the box and mail it in the next 4 days :)
#28 Blog everyday for a year - I haven't missed a day yet :)
#31 File for 501(c)3 status for Divas With A Purpose, Incorporated - I downloaded the form and saved it to my hard drive...the journey of a 1001 goals started with the first click, right???
#41 Read the entire Bible - I got a great App and downloaded it to my IPhone to help with reading while out and about or on my lunch break.
#63 Increase my monthly Mary Kay profits by 50% - I'm supposed to be having my first official party of the year this afternoon but I'm not really expecting much...lots of cancellations due to the weather and kids being out of school...I may need to continue to focus just on my Internet sales...we shall see.
#80 Have a date night with each of my son's - Oh my! How could I have forgotten!!! My oldest and I went to the Mother-Son Dance the week before Valentine's Day...I'm waiting on the pictures to come back before I do my blog post about it. We had a great time :)
#96 Support 20 small businesses with a purchase / review on my blog - I've made one purchase but need to reach out to the business owner and write up the review...I've been so tired by the time I get home and get the kids settled that I haven't even opened my mail in almost 2 weeks...sad, I know!
Hmmmm....once I started going down the list...I've made more progress than I thought I did!
Now to get started on #50 - Ask 20 friends to suggest a book and read each one.
This is where I need your input, Divas! Please list one book below that you think I should read during my 101 in 1001 journey.
Thanks in advance!!!
Thankful Thursday: Week 8
Image from: www.awesomelyluvvie.com
Good Morning Divas! I hope that everyone is having a fantastic week! My little sick buggers have got me a little under the weather today, but I'm determined to keep pressing forward. I've got tons of things to accomplish and, we all know, Mommy's don't get sick days :)
Last weekend I went to visit my younger sister and held my newest niece for the first time! She is absolutely adorable! It was love at first site! I truly love being an auntie and am so blessed with some awesome nephews and nieces.
It was like holding my little sister for the first time all over again!!! She looks so much like her mom did when she was a baby.
Once again, my family got together at my house this week for Fat Tuesday. My husband is from Louisiana so we had a big ol' pot of red beans and rice and some jambalaya.  The jambalaya has just gotten better and better throughout the week! I brought the last of it for lunch today.  Darn, now I have to cook tonight! No complaints, because I got a nice little break. Yes, we will eat on some leftovers for 2-3 days in our household if they last that long!
This week I'm thankful for:
~the gift of life and motherhood
~family and all the joys and struggles that come with them...that's what makes them uniquely them!
~early bedtimes
~a break from the cold weather and rain in my part of the world
~sweet tea and lemonade (I have to have something to replace my Mountain Dew for the next 40 days!)
~the spiritual growth I've had over the years that has tempered my tongue and my attitude. I've come a long way, but I know I still have a ways to go!
Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a blessing to others!!! What are you thankful for this week?
A Season of Sacrifice
I'm a Christian and absolutely, positively not ashamed of it. I respect others belief or decision not to believe, just as I expect others to respect mine.  Many people sacrificed so much - including their lives - for me to practice my religious freely and that is not something that I take lightly.
Today is Ash Wednesday, a day that marks the beginning of the season of Lent (the 40 days prior to Resurrection Sunday).  Many sacrifice, fast or abstain from something during this season of repentance, moderation and spiritual cleansing.  Anytime I reflect on the sacrifices that Jesus made for me, it humbles me and gives me a serious reality check.  This year for Lent I'm giving up Mountain Dew (it's ridiculous how many I drink in a days time!) but on a spiritual level I'm abstaining from negative talk and thoughts.  I know it's not feasible to do that 100% of the time, but my goal is to truly reflect on the positives.
I'm striving to:
~maintain a positive attitude in all situations despite those around me
~eliminate negative words from my vocabulary
~encourage others with my words and actions instead of feeding into pity parties, gossip, and rants
Over at Blogging While Nursing, Kalley has a great Season of Lent blog series posted.  Check it out!
How about you, Divas? Those that celebrate Lent...are you abstaining from anything during this season?
Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a blessing to others! You never know what little gesture will make a world of difference to someone!
DWP Tuesday: Linda
My 2 Crazy Curls
Happy Tuesday Divas!!!
Today's diva with a purpose is, also, a part of my wonderful online mommy group of friends.  She is truly an inspiration to me in so many ways!
Linda resides in Central Virginia with her 2 boys (ages 5 and 2).  She's expecting baby boy #3 in May :)
Linda's passion is couponing.  She's not one of those crazy coupon ladies that you see on Extreme Couponing, but she is dedicated to what she does and it's her full-time job.  "I use this passion as [as] an opportunity to for me stay home and raise my boys." Well, when this diva puts her mind to something she goes at it 200% plus some.  Her couponing and savvy shopping habits has contributed to her being able to stay home with her boys.
Who inspires you?
My boys inspire me.  I never thought I would say this, but they inspire me to do my best, to be a better person.  They make me look at the world differently.
What words do you want people to think of when they think of you?
Reserved, fun to be around, and loyal.
You can connect with Linda at her blog, My 2 Crazy Curls, where she shares her couponing deals and steals, her do-it-yourself projects and insights on her life as a mommy.  You can read one of my favorite recent posts here.  You can, also, connect with her on Facebook (www.facebook.com/my2crazycurls) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/4evamamii)
If you know of someone who should be spotlighted on DWP Tuesday, please submit their information here.
Upgrades to My Relaxation Area
Our family moved into our first "non-rented" home this past summer.  I say that because all the places we've lived have been "home" to us, but this one is really ours and we don't foresee moving anytime soon!  I must admit, we had a lot of major life changes in 2011...it's a miracle one of the adults in our household didn't throttle the other :)
Mr. Gee has been busy getting his man-cave to his liking and I'll admit I've felt a bit left out and wanted my own little project that would be all mine - not the family room or the kids room, but my own little special place.  I'm sure you other moms can relate to this, but there is only one room that I can go into and get privacy 75% of the time (which is a pretty high figure in my household) - the bathroom!  I was a little apprehensive about bringing up the idea of bathroom remodeling to the Mr. but what the heck...he should be used to my off the wall ideas by now, right?
I'm not envisioning anything too extensive (or expensive!) but enough to make it more mine.  My husband uses it, of course, but to him it's just a bathroom.  For me, it's my place to escape and relax in my garden tub with some scented candles and a coveted book to read uninterrupted for 20-30 minutes.  The one place that I can lock the door to keep my three year old and not feel guilty about it.  Wish me luck, Divas!!! And if any of you have any neat ideas that you've used or wish you could use to personalize your bathroom or bedroom, please share :)
Book Bonanza Giveaway Week 2
$15 Amazon Gift Card & Chicken Soup for the Soul
Book
Book Bonanza
Review & Giveaway EVENT!
Sponsored by MamaLuvsBooks
 (Picture from Amazon.com)
Book Review By MamaLuvsBooks:
"All in the Family" is a collection of 101 stories relating to funny, quirky, lovable, and "dysfunctional" families. I love the beginning where it talks about families:      "Families are all so different and yet the same. They're complicated and yet simple. They're a burden, but also a blessing. They're often the source of our greatest joys, but also our deepest pain. They can build us up and tear us down. Families add richness and complexity to our lives." - All in the Family
This quote from the book really hits home. It's all so true. We have had ups and downs within our family over the years. I love how the contributors in the book (especially the "Family Secrets" section) can be so open and honest. I'm sure I could write some stories of my own about my family, but writing it and putting everything out there would be tough.
I could relate to a story in the book about finding a long lost relative that someone did not even know they had in their life. I had a recent and wonderful experience this year that was similar. That's one thing I really love about this book, the fact that almost anyone will find some way to relate to the family stories.
THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE BOOK:
1. It is fun to read with many short stories to choose from
2. It has relevant topics that anyone can relate to
3. The stories are short and sweet; great for a pick-up and put down book
4. Some stories are very touching
5. Love the stories that are funny
6. It has 101 stories that all have a different life lessons
7. It's received other positive reviews on Amazon
SOCS:Fate
stream of consciousness Sunday
Writing Prompt:
What's your take on fate? Does everything happen for a reason?
Are we in control of our own destiny?
Fate. Meant to be. Faith. Pre-planned destiny by a high power. Changes. Curves in the road. Stumbling blocks. Pick yourself up. Start all over again. Free will. Choices. Willingness to accept things as they come.
Because of my faith and belief system, I believe God has a plan for my life.The wonderful thing is that He, also, gives us control of our destiny by choosing to  follow the path set out for us or by taking detours, u-turns, pit stops and hurdles along the way. I believe there is a reason and purpose behind life's actions. Our reactions to them will determine our level of growth, increase in knowledge and life's path from that point on. There are specific actions I can pin point where I know I could have done something differently and would have set my life on a totally different course.  However, I accept the choices I have made and embrace the learning lessons and results that I have today. I can control my destiny but I choose to pray and rely on a higher power to help me with my decisions.  It took some time and lots of hard-learned lessons for hard-headed me to realize that all-knowing, all-powerful Him could do a whole lot better being in control.
Ten Years Ago....
What was I up to on February 18, 2002? I honestly have no specific clue :) When I reflect back on where I was mentally and emotionally, I know I've grown and matured so much that it can be downright scary at times. My oldest son was 6 months old and I was enjoying every moment of it as a new mom.  From his babbles to his beautiful smiles and oh-so-wonderful hugs and kisses! I was so in love!!! He was truly my world at the time.  My world had changed so much in just 6 short months.  The unexpected custody battle with his father was just starting off and I had no clue how wild and crazy THAT ride would get.
I'd been back at work for 3 months from my extended maternity leave and recently promoted to Front Office Manager / Guest Services Manager with the company I'd worked with for close to 3 years.  It's crazy how much responsibility I had before I was even 22 years old.  I thrived on it. It kept me centered and focused.  I never had a chance to have those wild, crazy moments in my 20s (ok...maybe I had a few...LOL) but I honestly don't think I missed out on much.
I was in the right place, at the right time, involved in the right things.  Those life experiences shaped me to be the wonderful, divalicous being that I am today.  I'm constantly evolving and growing and learning from this wonderful journey called life.  If I could go back and give myself advice 10 years ago, I would have warned myself not to be as trusting and emotionally involved with people who didn't return the favor.  It would have saved myself lots of heartache in the long run.  However, overall, I have no huge regrets...no blaring moments where I cringe...a long time ago I realized that I had to accept the decisions I made, learn from them, grow from them and keep it moving.  I think that advice has worked out pretty well in the long run :)
When you reflect back on how you've evolved over the past 10 years, what are your feelings and thoughts?
I personally LOVE THEM :) I think it gives us bloggers a unique way to share our passion for blogging with one another and show others how much appreciation we have for our peers who take the time and energy to "speak" to us a daily, weekly, monthly or whatever basis!!!
Friendship Friday is a weekend blog hop that's designed to help the participants:
~Foster friendships with other bloggers
~Share you and your blog's uniqueness
~Grow your blog and social media networks
Each week a question is posed to help the participants get to know one another . To participate you just need to create a Friendship Friday post with the button and/or link back to the original blog.
You can find out more and join in by going to Create With Joy's blog.
Perrigo Nutritionals Formula Review & Giveaway
When my youngest son was born, I'll be honest my husband and I had moments where we seriously struggled with purchasing the name brand formula that he was started on in the hospital by his pediatrician.  I don't know how the conversation came up with my pediatrician during one of his well-visits, but my pediatrician shocked my by saying he gave his twins the Parent's Choice brand of formula.  WHAT???? That was all I needed to know...Mr. Bradley was quickly switched to Parent's Choice.  He had no problem adjusting to it and the cost of one can was almost half the cost of the brand I'd previously been using.  While in the hospital with my daughter, we used the brand that they recommended but I'd already done the research, spoke with my pediatrician and decided that I'd be using the Target Brand (Up & Up) for her ... imagine my surprise when I found out they were both made by the same company - Perrigo Nutritionals!!!
recent study* shows that only 30% of moms are willing to buy store brand products for their babies, but did you know that all infant formulas made in the United States must provide complete nutrition for growing babies and meet FDA requirements for safety, nutrition, and quality? In fact, store brand infant formulas are nutritionally equivalent to similar national formula brands such as Enfamil or Similac, but cost half the price, which can save you about $600 a year.
DWP Facebook Fan Contest
To celebrate DWP hitting 100 likes on Facebook (hey, we have to start somewhere...LOL!!!)...I'm having a Facebook fan appreciation giveaway...there will be 2 separate giveaways for surprise gift boxes...the winners from our previous giveaways can attest that these gift boxes have some really neat stuff and the retail value of the boxes can be up to $50 or more depending on what's included :)
The first prize will be given away using the Rafflecopter tool below.
The second prize will be given away using a friendly competition method.  Share the Divas With A Purpose Facebook page with your friends and encourage them to like it as well...they must leave a comment on the fan page stating who referred them to the page in order for the entry to count.  You will receive one entry per comment on the fan page.  Each entry will be assigned a numerical number (I will comment under each to assign the number so there's no confusion).  The winner will be picked using Random.org
Both contests will run until midnight EST on February 29th.
Thank you all for your support Divas With A Purpose!!!
Overcoming Fear
Photo courtesy of thingsweforget.blogspot.com
Years ago, I saw a church marquee that said, "How can you have fear, but profess faith".  Out of all the marquees I've passed over the years, this one stood out to me the most.  Many times the things we fear are simply things we do not understand or know about, but having faith should release those fears.
I know many times we'll say we're "afraid" or "scared" of something just out of habit.  However, true fear of the unknown, challenges, change should be overcome with the knowledge that our faith will lead us in the right direction.
Blessings to you all, Divas :)
