Teaching our Children How to Give

The "giving season" is quickly approaching us. I say that somewhat sarcastically because I truly believe that giving should be a year-long affair - not just something focused on from Thanksgiving through Christmas but that's another soapbox for another day ;)

Seriously, there is more focus on giving during the next few months. Especially to make the holiday seasons more bearable and enjoyable for those less fortunate than many of us - whether it's financially, emotionally, and/or physically.

Teaching our children to be givers at an early age helps instill in them a behavior that will follow them through their lives.

First and foremost, we must not FORCE our children to give.  This totally defeats the purpose.  Making it a chore or punishment takes away the unselfishness and "feel good" feeling that should be associated with giving.  By giving them options and engaging them in the giving process, you will get them excited about helping others.

Give to organizations they can relate to. For example, during Christmas, I have my children pick a child from our local Angel Tree that's their age.  They are given a budget to spend and shop based on items they would like to have but understand that there's a child out there that they are helping to have a happy Christmas morning, too.  (This is a two-fold lesson on giving and budgeting...win-win!)

Children learn patterns and behaviors by patterning themselves after the adults in their lives.  Show your child how to give by being an active giver. Let them see you volunteering and giving back to your community.

Give thanks on a regular basis for what you have. Keep a family gratitude journal or establish a ritual of listing something you're thankful for each day at dinner-time.

Find children's books that teach about giving (my favorite is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein) and read them to one another.

Support local food and clothing drives by giving out of your closets or pantry with your children's help.

These are just a few suggestions we try to implement in our household. What traditions does your family have to include your children in the giving process?

SOCS: Continuing to Grow and Learn

The purpose of Stream of Consciousness writing is to do just that - write. Whatever comes to mind on a particular topic or what's in your thoughts and perhaps needs to just get out of of you.

Today’s (totally and completely optional) prompt:
What new tricks would you like to learn or have you learned?

I wouldn't call it a trick, but I'm definitely working more on streamlining my endeavors and focusing on those things that truly bring me joy.  I've been blogging for almost 3 years now and it's brought me in contact with so many wonderful, giving and caring people.  It's, also, expanded my horizons and exposed me to organizations and opportunities that I'd never considered I'd be associated with.

Over the next year I would like to expand my marketing contacts and make more of a direct impact in communities and with women's organizations dedicated to empowering and motivating women (the whole premise of Divas With A Purpose).

I'd, also, like to focus more on my personal finance posts - with today's economy there are so many that are struggling financially and I believe that by collaborating with others we can come up with solutions that can be implemented within our personal lives to help with cutting back, creating budgets, saving on necessities and being able to splurge from time to time.

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post hosted by jana's thinking place
It is 5 minutes of your time and a brain dump. If you'd like to try it...here are the rules:

~Set a timer and write for 5 minutes
~Write an intro if you'd like but don't edit the post. No spellchecking. No proofreading. Just raw writing.
~Publish it somewhere. Anywhere. Your back door to your blog, if you'd like, but make it accessible.
~Add the Stream of Consciousness Sunday badge to your post
~Link up your post at jana's thinking place
~Visit your fellow bloggers and show them some love

#GracoSafety Babies "R" Us Event

Happy Friday, Divas :)

Earlier this week I shared with you all the great time the little diva and I had at the #GracoSafety Night Out with fellow bloggers in Charlotte. Today I'm going to share with you the fun I had that following Saturday hosting my very first event. I got the opportunity to travel to Concord, North Carolina and spend the afternoon with some great families and employees at the Babies "R" Us discussing Graco's newest product - The SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40!

Keeping our little one's safe is high on all parents list of priorities. The American Association of Pediatrics suggests that children be rear-facing until they are 2 years old. Graco's newest product - The SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40 is the ONLY infant car seat the provides rear-facing protection for infants up until 40 pounds (the weight of an average 2 year old).

The families that I chatted with last weekend agreed that SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40 was stylish and easy to use.  The top features were the adjustable base that allows the infant car seat to grow their children and the Simply Safe Adjust™ harness systems that allows harness and headrest to be adjusted with just one hand (that was my favorite feature hands down!).

During my afternoon at the #GracoSafety event, the families and I discussed key safety concerns of parents and the importance of having a car seat that could grow with our children.  My favorite part of the afternoon was having the opportunity to present two moms-to-be with their very own Graco SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40!!!

Overall, the families that I interacted with were very impressed with the ease of use of the SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40. One father stated it specifically addressed one of the key features he was looking for in an infant seat - lightweight and easy to transition from the car to stroller.

The Graco SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40 is available exclusively at Babies "R" Us and one lucky reader had the opportunity to win a $25 Gift Certificate (giveaway has ended).
Congrats to our winner - name will be announced as soon as she confirms her prize :)

Disclaimer:
The Graco SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40 – the first and only newborn to two-year infant car seat that actually grows with your baby from four pounds all the way up to 40 pounds. The car seat is designed for a parent on the go. The infant car seat can be easily removed from the base and used as a carrier when the infant is small, providing portability and convenience so you can easily move your infant in and out of the car without disturbing them.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recently made the recommendation to keep all children in rear-facing car seats until the age of 2. Graco set out to make this product so parents can keep infants rear facing longer while still keeping them comfortable.
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Graco. The opinions and text are all mine.

Thankful Thursday - October 25, 2012

The words in the picture above pretty much encompass how I feel this week. It's been a great week but it's, also, been an emotionally trying week.

I have so much to be thankful for and many of them are things I choose not to discuss on my blog (even I try to keep some sort of line of separation, at times, believe it or not).

I can say, that I'm thankful for the lief experiences that have shaped me to be the person that I am today.  Many times we say I wish XYZ didn't happen or that ABC happened this way - I can honestly say I don't have those thoughts. I truly embrace the experiences that I have because I know they have and continue to shape me into the wonderful diva that I am :)

What are you thankful for this week? Are there unpleasant life experiences that you can now look back on and say you're thankful for the experience purely because it made you stronger and wiser?

Divas Night Out and #GracoSafety

Last week, Miss V and I got a much-needed girls night out! We were invited to Charlotte to learn all about Graco's newest product - The SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40.

This is the only infant car seat to provide rear-facing protection for our little ones from birth all the way up to 2 years old! I'll be honest with you divas, my youngest two were turned around way before they should have been. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends they remain rear-facing until 2 years old or 40 pounds - mine probably didn't make it to 6-9 months.  Mainly because it was difficult to find a seat they could sit in comfortably based on their height.  However, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, toddlers are five times safer riding rear-facing!

We've been using the SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40 for a little over a week now and Miss V has had no issues at all. Honestly, I believe she's more comfortable and content - especially when we're making longer trips since she's in a reclining position.

Thankful Thursday - October 18, 2012

Happy Thursday Divas :)

I hope you've all had a fantastic week! I didn't do Thankful Thursday last week as my focus was on International Day of the Girl. Doing the research and connecting with others throughout the day gave me lots to think about and made me especially grateful to have been raised within a family of strong women who encourage and motivate each other to succeed.  Not everyone has that.  The thought of someone my niece's age (9) being forced into marriage or child labor saddens me and motivates me to continue bringing awareness to the issues that affect girls worldwide and to continue the conversation on what we can do to make a change.

MissV turned 1!!! We had a fantastic time celebrating with our family and friends.  My youngest sister even surprised me with a visit for her birthday. It was great seeing both my sisters.

Overall, it's been a fantastic week!

DWP Challenge Day 7: Living and Learning

As I blogged on previously, one of my life philosophies is living without regrets. Learning from my mistakes, growing from them and striving to become a better person overall are what I try to focus on.

Today's challenge took me awhile to complete because I'm selective about who I share my story with in a one-on-one basis. I know, sounds odd coming from a blogger who puts almost all of it out there for my readers on a regular basis, right? I've learned though that those closest to you are often the ones to be a little too judgmental - especially when someone's trying to grow and rise above previous choices.

While many around may have wished I took a different path in life, I'm confident that I'm where I am for a specific reason.  The choices and path that I've taken in life have brought me to this point for a reason that I may not fully understand right now, but I know that there's a greater purpose behind it all.

Those are the words I shared with someone who was struggling with a major decision recently made in their life.  Sometimes the choices we make may shock and stun others, but if you have peace in your heart and spirit once you've made it - then don't waver in your decision. Keep your head up and continue to press onward and upward.

You can see the inspiration behind the challenge and the first 7 days challenges below:

Day 1: Write Personal Mission Statement

Day 2: Rather than criticize, coach. Motivate with positive feedback and influence.

Day 3: Do something nice for someone else - leave a soda money by the vending machine, pay for someone's coffee, let that extra car turn during your morning or afternoon commute, etc

Day 4: Focus on the positive all day. No negative thoughts. (Warning - often when you make a conscious effort to be positive, it will seem as though anything and everything that can go wrong will - keep smiling and stay positive through it all).

Day 5: Connect with at least 4 other people and commit to motivating and inspiring one another for the next 5 days. It doesn't have to be anything ornate - just a simple motivating text, email, Facebook post, etc.

Day 6: Have a selfish moment. Do something for yourself.

Day 7: Share lessons from your successes and failures with someone that can benefit from it.

You can see an overview and the inspiration behind this 14-day challenge here.

No Regrets

Ever had one of those moments that seemed to be a life-changer or shifter? An event in your life you can pinpoint as the moment your life's direction shifted courses? If you'd made just one different move or decision, it would have totally altered where you're at right now?

It seems like I have a few of those moments in my life. A question I often here people ask is "what would you change in your life". Honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. Not saying that I'm in that perfect place and my course has been all sunshine and berries. Far, far, far from it. However, I am who I am because of what I've experienced. I've made some stupid choices but the results have shaped my personality and life.

International Day of the Girl

Source: Because I am a Girl (http://plan-international.org)

Having a daughter last year really put some things into perspective for me. Even though I'd been a mom for almost 11 years when I had Miss V - becoming a mom to a little girl was a different experience.  There are so many different issues that affect our girls that are often ignored and need to be addressed within our communities and society.

1 in 3 girls around the world is denied an education because of poverty, discrimination and violence.

Today the world celebrates International Day of the Girl to bring worldwide awareness to the issues girls face in different countries that hinder them receiving an education: from poverty to forced marriages.  In some countries, girls as young as 8 are forced into marriages and motherhood way before their bodies, minds, and spirits are ready for it.

Making it through both primary and secondary education is critical to girls being able to help break the cycle of poverty.

International Day of the Girl | CARE

1 in 3 girls in developing world are married before they are 18. These children are twice as likely to be abused by their husbands and are often treated as property - bought, sold and tossed aside.  Girls who complete secondary education are 6 TIMES LESS likely to become child brides. Supporting educating these children helps to protect and change their life paths.

I encourage you to support this important initiative and make a difference in other divas lives.  By simply connecting with others via social network outlets and spreading the word - you can make a difference.

GIRLS + EDUCATION = DIVATUDE
PASS IT ALONG!

How are you committed to empowering and educating our girls? What does GIRLS + EDUCATION = to you?

Feel free to chime in on our Facebook page and see other responses.

Free and Low Cost Screening Providers

Find free and low-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings in your area National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a program that many may not be aware of:

National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP)

This program provides low-income, uninsured and under-served women access to screenings and diagnostic services to include:

  • Clinical breast exams
  • Mammograms
  • Pap Tests
  • Pelvic exams
  • Diagnostic testing for abnormal results
  • Referrals for treatment when necessary
Deaths from breast and cervical cancers can be avoided if cancer screening rates were increased among women most at risk.  Deaths occur disproportionately among women who are either uninsured or under-insured (there insurance doesn't cover the necessary tests/treatments).

All women are at risk, but regular screenings can prevent or detect breast and cervical cancer early.  Screening guidelines have been established but you should definitely discuss with your health care provider if you should be tested earlier or more frequently based on your health and family history.

You may be eligible for free or low-cost screenings if you meet the following guidelines:
  • You are between 40-64 years of age for breast cancer screening
  • You are between 18-64 years of age for cervical cancer screening
  • You have no insurance or your insurance does not cover screening exams
  • Your yearly income is at or below 250% of the federal poverty level
You can go here to search for free and low-cost screening providers in your state.

DWP Challenge Day 6: It's OK to be First

With our many different roles, we often put ourselves at the very bottom of our to-do lists (if we even make it on the lists at all!).

It's okay to do things for ourselves. It's okay to take time out and away from our family, friends and loved ones and just indulge in pure, selfish moments.

One of the definitions I found for selfishness is "exclusive regard to one's own interest or happiness".  Often times that takes on a negative connotation. However, in our many roles in life we often place so much emphasis everyone else that we need gentle reminders to do something for ourselves.

We need to unwind and de-stress. We need to pamper ourselves and let our families (especially our children) see us do so.

My selfish moment today: enjoying one of my daughter's birthday cupcakes while sitting on my patio enjoying the quietness of the afternoon while my kiddos napped.

You can find more information in our resources!!
Prizes By Sponsors For This Event Are !!

Why Are Mammograms Important?
Annual mammograms can detect cancer early — when it is most treatable. In fact, mammograms show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. Mammograms can also prevent the need for extensive treatment for advanced cancers and improve chances of breast conservation.
This quick medical exam uses a noninvasive X-ray targeted to each breast, producing pictures that your doctor can use to identify and treat any abnormal areas, possibly indicating the presence of cancer.

How often should I get a mammogram?
The National Cancer Institute recommends:
•Women 40 years and older should get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years.
•Women who have had breast cancer or other breast problems or who have a family history of breast cancer might need to start getting mammograms before age 40, or they might need to get them more often. Talk to your doctor about when to start and how often you should have a mammogram.
