New Year's Theme Song

One of my blogger friends, Kalley @ Blogging While Nursing, posted this last week and I thought it was a great idea. She got the idea from another wonderful blogger, Kita @ Say What U Wanna, so perhaps another blogger will pass this on again :)

I've tweaked it some, but my question for the week is what would you say your theme song for 2012 is going to be?

I'm still narrowing down my choices, but I'd love to hear from you all and I will share by New Years' Eve.

Enjoy the rest of 2011, Divas, and let's get ready for bigger and better things in 2012.

Be Blessed!!!
~Michelle

UPDATED:  I was driving this afternoon with my boys and this song came on...this totally epitomizes the attitude that I want to have in this upcoming year.  2011 had it's share of struggles but I came up on top and truly believe that there are some wonderful things in store for me in 2012 and beyond...Be Blessed Divas and remember with God on our side "we got this!" :)

Happy Holidays!!!

Divas, I will be enjoying this last week at home with my little ones and not posting again until 2012. We're spending time with family, celebrating my divalicious mother's 59th birthday and attempting to relax and prepare to head back to work.

Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a blessing to others!

Christmas Spirit

I've heard and seen lots of people in my circle state that they just don't feel the Christmas spirit this year and when questioned it usually comes back to not feeling like shopping or having enough funds to get Christmas gifts.  Our society has become one that really focuses on the commercialization of Christmas - something that has been stated over and over and over again, I know. I guess I didn't realize that I had so many people in my social circles that had been bit by the bug too.

Don't get me wrong, I truly enjoy purchasing gifts for my family and close friends - maybe a little too much...LOL  However, I do it because I truly enjoy it and not because I feel that I have to because it's about to be December 25th.

I love this time of year because of the spirit of giving and celebrating the most wonderful gift of all - the birth of Jesus Christ and what He means to us all.

I love this time of year because I get to see and hear from family and friends that I may not talk to or see on a regular basis throughout the year.  We get to catch up over some good food and spirits, have some laughs. make new memories - great times!

As my kids are getting older and able to understand more about the holiday season, I'm able to share and start family traditions with them.  My boys and I attempted to make ornaments this year.  It was an #epicfail but it was lots of fun.  My 3 year old accidentally toppled the tree and was in tears because he thought he'd ruined Christmas.  The look on his face was priceless and we got a good laugh out of it later, but I was able to use that moment to remind him about why we really celebrate Christmas.  AND we got to decorate the tree all over again.  Those are memories that we'll reflect on years from now.

Divas, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season - whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or all of the above.  Enjoy the time spent with your family and friends. Reflect on how far you've come and prepare yourself for the remainder of your journey.  If you're in the position to help someone out this holiday season, do so - even if it's just by donating a few dollars to The Salvation Army bell-ringers you pass by going from store-to-store.

Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a blessing to others!!!

DWP - Tamra Simmons

I've been fortunate to "know" today's Diva With A Purpose through her Facebook posts which are ALWAYS uplifting and positive. She has a beautiful spirit, tons of energy, a wonderful sense of humor and the drive and determination to be successful in all she does.

I'd like you all to meet Mrs. Tamra Thomas Simmons

Family: I have a husband, Josh Simmons, daughter Kamia (age 10), and son Josiah  (8 months).

Passion:  My passion is to increase awareness to others in the form of being a motivator, innovator and leader. I volunteer with several different organizations: The Nashville Rescue Mission, Mother's Against Drunk Driving, CASA (Child Appointed Special Advocate) and domestic violence shelters. Helping others in any form or fashion is how I give back to the community - whether its through prayer, finding the next best bargain deal, or helping others' businesses get up off the ground. I love to serve!

Motivation:  I do what I do because I want my children to see that in life it's not always about them but it's about others. In order for them to know this I must show them through my actions. I can't just tell them how to be when they grow up, but I will and do instill in them the importance of family and the importance of others.

Inspiration:  Who inspires me is my mother. Even though she is no longer with me, I think of her daily and often wonder if there's something I can do to make her proud. Being without your mother most of your life produces challenges, but instead of feeling sorry for myself I grew closer to God. Through her death God  introduced me to strength. My grandparents, also, inspire me because they pushed me to where I am today and for that I'm grateful.

3 words I want people to think of me are: Determined, Strong, Loving

Current Projects / Future Plans:  I am currently expanding my Social Media Marketing company named All About Marketing, LLC. Right now, I am working with a company to produce/promote a Christian apparel line and, also, in the process of signing upcoming gospel artists to assist with their marketing. Another upcoming project is working as a freelance writer for Gospel360online.com.

Turn The Page, Please!!!

As we get closer and closer to the new year, through family and friends we are going to be overwhelmed with new year resolutions and game plans.  Some have genuine intentions and others are just going through the motions, but we have to give them an "A" for effort, right? One of my Facebook friends said it quite bluntly but I have to agree with her: "Y'all talking like your credit score starts over or your old problems go away....NEWSFLASH:  you're gonna be in the same "ish" in 2012 if you don't change within yourself!"  I had to do some editing, but I'm sure we all get the point.

For many people, it may be time to turn the page on certain people, places and actions from their life.  If we keep focusing our time and energy on the same things that keep bringing us down, then we won't be able to move on to new and better things.  For me, it means that I will need to turn the page on some friendships from the past.  It's not going to be easy, but for my sanity it is time for me to move on and continue to pray for them from afar.

My suggestion to us all is that we reflect on the different situations that we need to "turn the page" on and truly move on in 2012.  Release what needs to be released and open your hands and hearts to receive the blessings that have been patiently waiting for you to reach for them.

Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a Blessing to others!

From Friday's contest for a holiday box full of goodies (2 winners) - What are your tips for staying frugal during the holidays?

So many people over spend during the holidays and then come January, they are depressed when looking at the bill. We finished our holiday shopping for other people (I'm so not good at shopping), they got practical gifts and everything was on sale.

I don't believe in spending more than we have. Now for my daughter, I would break the bank, but we're going to be wise, affordable gifts only.

Christmas is not just about presents, it about telling, and showing people around us that we love them. We don't have to always do that with money.

Cool tips... Over the past years, after having children I've incorporated, buying a family game( on black Friday) for friends with more than one child so the entire family can enjoy. Most games are no more than 5-10.00. It's reasonable and practical. I don't buy gifts for friends during the holidays just kids. But, I celebrate my friend's birthdays. It's easy on my pockets and it does not put me in the hole.
I have a set limit of shopping and now that I have 2 children that budget has to stay within that range.

Financial Friday: Reality Check

It's amazing to me how many people have no idea where they stand financially and do not care to find out. If your situation is not that good, ignoring it will only make it worse.  Believe me, been there - done that - tried to buy the t-shirt but credit card was declined!

Seriously though, if you have no clue where the money you are earning is going or who you owe what, then you will stay in a never-ending cycle of being overdrawn, frustrated and, let's face it, BROKE!

Anyone that's gone through the debt elimination and personal finance overhaul should be able to agree that budgeting is truly the first step.  In order to budget, you have to know what you have coming in and what's going out.

Most online banks have the option to download your transactions to an Excel spreadsheet - do this and sort by payee.  If you're giving your bank a lot of your money bank in overdraft and NSF fees - definitely time to make some changes by seeing what's triggering the fees.  Do you have too many auto-drafts set up that don't coincide with your pay days? Are you overdrawing with your debit card?

Next, determine where you're spending too much money (for me it was eating out with co-workers for lunch) and eliminate or decrease it as much as possible. As hard as it was, I had to give myself $20 a week for lunch (believe me, that was a huge decrease!) and once it was gone, it was gone. It forced me to be more frugal with my lunch choices (I know all $5 or less lunch options on my side of town!) and eat from home more.

Many people don't get pass this step because it involves changing your lifestyle and being uncomfortable for awhile.  I mean, who really wants to eat ham and cheese sandwiches from home in the breakroom??? You have to want to change your financial outlook for your sake and for your children's sake. They are learning by watching you and it will shape how they handle money growing up and in their adult life.

So, divas, let's hear it? What's your reality check? Where do you spend the most that you could definitely trim down or even eliminate? Are you ready and willing to be uncomfortable for a season in order to have financial freedom?

Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a blessing to others!!!

Disclaimer: I am not a financial adviser or planner. I'm a diva who's real enough to admit that I made financial whoopsies early in life and had to make some serious changes to better myself and my family.  It wasn't easy but it was definitely worth it!

Weekly Recap

Good Afternoon Divas! I hope everyone is having a fantastic week. I'm excited about the new ideas and plans for Divas With A Purpose that are shaping up.  I've brought back some older features and have connected with some wonderful divas and hope to add more giveaways, spotlights and guest posts in the coming months.

Speaking of giveaways - don't forget we have two that are ending this week:

A $10 Amazon gift card  from last Thursday's post Wake Up Everybody and two surprise goody boxes from last week's Financial Friday post.

One recurring conversation topic among my blogger friends is the seemingly lack of support for our blogs and the time and effort we put into them.  To blog is to share an extension of yourself with complete strangers who often become confidants and friends over time.  I have been lucky enough to establish friendships with bloggers who I've never met, but we've shared each other successes and disappointments over the years.

The concept for the Diva Blogging Circle is very simple - if you'd like to have your blog listed you must agree to support the other ladies in the circle with comments, shares and by listing a link to their blog on your page. There's now a page on this blog set up for more information on the circle.

DWP Tuesday: The Kouponista

It's been awhile since we've profiled a Diva With A Purpose here on the blog, but it's something that I've wanted to get back to doing.  Over the past year, I've come in contact with so many wonderful divas that are doing some great things within their families and communities.

With the rise of popularity with the show Extreme Couponing (to my disdain), many people are jumping on the coupon bandwagon.  However, for many people, couponing and bargain shopping has been a way of life way before the shows and the extreme stockpiling stories.

Kesha Bannister

One person that I've come across that is truly passionate about couponing and teaching others the craft is Kesha Banister - The Kouponista.  Kesha and her significant other (Trey, but we affectionately refer to him as Mr Koup) have 5 children between them - 4 boys and 1 little diva.  With a family of 6, couponing and bargain shopping is not a fad - it is a necessity!  Kesha teaches as many people as she can about couponing through her website, Facebook page and with her daily encounters while shopping because it is truly a passion of hers.

Why does she do what she does? For reasons many of us can relate to - for her children and to better their lives and to empower others to save in today's tough economy.  She doesn't want any man or woman to feel like they can't provide for themselves or their families - with smart couponing and bargain shopping it is possible to get the necessities for your family.

Her kids and her grandmother are her sources of inspiration and when asked for 3 words to describe herself - "I'm HIS messenger" is what she boldly stated. What an awesome testament! I truly believe in order to receive more you have to show that you are capable of managing and multiplying what you currently have.  The Kouponista's approach to shopping and savings speaks volumes to that and I'm excited about the plans she has for 2012 and beyond.

Some projects she has in the works are: a coupon meet & greet; a couponing convention; expanding her website to include vlogs (video blogs) thorugh YouTube and to create TheKouponista Forum.

You can connect with The Kouponista on her Facebook pageher website, thekouponista.com; and on Twitter @TheKouponista.

Sources of Inspiration

What gives you inspiration? What influences youractions and your beliefs? What produces a strong sense of feeling or thought inyour world?

For me, it's a few things:

My faith: Handsdown if it wasn't for my faith and belief in God, I would have probably gone ininsane years ago. I realized a long time ago that there truly is truth inthe saying "God won't put more on you that you can bare" and thatmany of us do not know our true strengths. It's been in the midst ofspiritual storms that I have grown closer to God and my family. I'velearned who my true friends were and when it was time to let some people andthings go. I've been humbled and reminded what truly matters in my life.

My mother:As often the case, it took me becoming a mother to realize just how wonderfulmy mom was and how many sacrifices she'd made over the years (and stillcontinues to make even though her children are all "grown") for us.My teenage years were special to say the least and we grew very far apart, butthe birth of my oldest son established a common bond between us and foreverchanged the dynamics of our relationship. My mom has a sweet spirit thatjust calms you. She believes in the power of fasting and praying and often willcall me up out of the blue to say a word of prayer for me (and it's always theright time!). I've often said if I am just a fraction of the woman thatmy mother then I will still be one awesome diva!!!

My children:My kiddos are so different and yet so similar. They each bring somethingdifferent to our family dynamics and I could not imagine my world withoutthem. I "grew up" with my oldest son having him at 21. Hebrought some serious reality checks to my life. He has a nurturing spiritthat is evident in the way he dotes after his little brother and those close tohim. My youngest son is full of energy, life and laughter. And thenewest addition to our family, my little diva, gives me a whole new perspectiveon motherhood. I will be her role model when it comes to being a woman, wife, and mother. That's an awesome task and it makes me think twiceabout the decisions and actions that I take. The three of them keep me incheck and remind me that my daily walk is shaping the legacy that I will leavefor them and their families.

So, let's hear it Divas? Who or what inspiresyou?

Have a blessed day, Divas, and be a blessing toothers - you never know who you are inspiring with your daily walk!

Financial Friday: Holiday Spending

Good Morning Divas :) The holiday rush is definitely upon us! There are so many deals running rampant and it is so easy to overspend even while attempting to be thrifty.

Those that shop online know that a good deal comes up quick and you have to jump on the bandwagon to ensure you don't miss out.  However, make sure you're not spending money just to save money - hopefully you caught that :)

My suggestions:

  • Keep a list of people you have decided to shop for somewhere handy - next to your computer, on your smart phone, etc - and refer to it whenever a great deal comes up.  If it's an awesome deal - see who you can check off your list by purchasing it.  If you can't match it up to someone, then pass on it.
  • Create a master budget.  I have separate bank accounts for different spending. Make all your purchases out of a "gift account" that is separate from other budget items.  Do not transfer more than you have pre-planned into the account.  If the deal exceeds what's in your account, then it is not a good deal for you.  Pass on it, but be a good friend and "gift" the information to others by passing the deal on to other family and friends.
  • Create cute homemade gifts and include a note telling the recipient how much they mean to you. I'm the most un-creative person but was able to find lots of ideas just by using Google. I just love those jarred food gifts (I may be weird, I don't know) but I found the cutest little recipe for White Chocolate Chunk Brownies in a Jar - adorn with a pretty ribbon and cute homemade gift bag.
Brownies - Brownie Mix in a Jar

Ok, Divas, sharing time....what are your tips for staying frugal during the holidays? Do you have any divalicious homemade gift ideas to share? Post your comments below. It's the holiday season and I love to give, so two commenters will be chosen to receive a surprise holiday gift box full of goodies. Comments must be posted by 11:59 PM EST on Thursday, December 15, 2011. The winners will be announced on Friday's blog and chosen by Random.org

Wake Up Everybody

"No dream comes true until you wake up and go to work" - Anonymous

"Wake up and smell the coffee" - My Daddy

My ten-year old. Love him to bits. Want to strangle him 85% of the time.  If this is a prelude to the teen years, Lord help me now!  He's one of those kids that is borderline genius but has almost no commonsense at all. A scary thought thinking about the world we live and the one that he will live in when he becomes an adult.  I know so many adults that are book-smart but lack common and worldly sense.  In today's society, you definitely need a good balance of both.

I've come into contact with so many people that have these wonderful dreams that could have a lasting effect on so many people, but they just won't face reality that they need help making the first steps or they have so much "self-inflicted mess" in their lives that it stops them from being successful.

Divas, don't be that person, please! Let go of whatever is holding you back from taking the first steps.  As we get closer and closer to the new year, do some emotional house cleaning so you'll be rejuvenated and revived for 2012.  There are so many people that did not (and will not) get a chance to see another year and left a list of things they wanted to do but never got around to doing.  Let's agree to live life to the fullest and embrace the experiences and encounters that are out there waiting for us to just wake up and realize they're there for us!

What is one thing from 2011 that you didn't get a chance to do, but you are striving to accomplish in 2012? Leave your responses below and one diva will be blessed with a $10 Amazon gift card from Divas With A Purpose, Incorporated just for sharing.  The deadline for posting your entry is 11:59 PM EST on Wednesday, December 14, 2011.  The winner will be chosen using Random.org.

DWP Tuesday

Drive. Determination. Hard-working. Perseverance. Faith. Struggle. Break-through. Village. Helping-hands. Giving back. Family. Sisters. Reliability. These and many other words are very familiar to women that have a defined purpose in their lives.  Identifying and walking in your purpose can be very fulfilling - yet challenging.  Balancing faith, home, work, volunteer work, side hustles, family, friends and self can be challenging to say the least.  It takes lots of energy, time management, patience and prayer!  Reaping the rewards, however, is often the most beneficial.  Helping another person with the resources, time and talent that you've been blessed with is an an awesome feeling. We all know someone who fits this description, including ourselves!

Beginning next week, I will be spotlighting a special Diva With A Purpose (DWP) each Tuesday.  If you know of someone who should be spotlighted, please nominate them by sending an email to divaswithpurpose@gmail.com

It's Only A Test!

Yesterday during my pastor's sermon, he reminded us of the sermon that he preached to us on January 2nd, 2011. As he spoke and walked us through the scripture, all I could do was thank God for having me in the right place at the right time on January 2nd when he reminded us that "it was only a test" - the experiences, the setbacks, the let-downs we we experienced were only a test of our faith and that out of those tests came our testimony. We had what we call "stupid" church that day and I left that service on an emotional high and excited about all the wonderful things that were in store for 2011.  As with any new year, I had done my goal planning (not resolutions but set goals with a plan of action) and was ready to embrace the new experiences and life lessons of 2011. Boy, was I in for a shock.

Literally, the moment I got out of service I received news that changed the dynamic of my family and seriously tested my faith and belief.  As I was walking to my car, I pulled out my cell phone to call my dad and saw that I had over 15 missed calls from 3 different family members with no voice mails or text messages.  I knew instantly something had happened.

My mother is the oldest of 12 children.  We're a very close-knit family.  My grandmother used to always tell us "to take care of one another" and that's something we've done.  Everyone has their own role within the family and when someone is missing they are truly missed.  I grew up having sleepovers at my grandparents' house with my cousins and younger aunt and uncles - wrestling matches, Red Light/Green Light, Simon Says, talent shows, hop scotch, knuckles, spades, pitty pat and tunk were staples.  We go on an annual girls trip every year with the aunts and girl cousins where there is plenty of laughter, food, bargain shopping and bonding. I was in tears the years I had to miss our family cookout in July and spent the whole weekend texting my cousins so I could be part of the fun.

On January 2nd, my youngest uncle passed away unexpectedly at 42 years young.  To lose a part of the circle was an emotional blow to us all.  The words from my pastor's sermon stuck through me during the days, weeks and months to follow.  His death brought us closer to one another. It reminded us how precious life is and not to take one another for granted.

To start the year out on such an emotional roller coaster could have deterred me from my goals for the year.  I'll admit that I went through a period of time where I felt stagnant, but I was able to recognize it and force myself to keep pushing on (with the help of some wonderful relatives and friends who are very assertive!).

I can definitely confirm that the tests of this past year have given me a testimony for 2011.  As I sit here and listen to my 8 week old babble and giggle, I'm reminded of the circle of life - my family was mourning the loss of of one member, another was forming in my womb.

Keep pushing Divas! Despite the setbacks and letdowns you may have experienced this year, keep moving.  Focus on the positive and change what you can. You may not have accomplished all that you set out to in 2011 but be thankful you are still here to continue pressing towards your goals.

Be Blessed Divas and have an awesome week!!!

December Love Drop

Love Drop is an organization that I found via Twitter (oh the joys of social networking) and they have done some awesome things for people across the US.  Please read, share, and help out if you can.

Be Blessed Divas and remember, especially this holiday season, to be a blessing to others!!!

Help give a Love Drop this season!

This Christmas the team's coming together for Diomi and her son Nallee, who are going into the cold Milwaukee winter with very little food, clothes, and other necessities. Diomi has been through so much, including the loss of her father, the loss of her job, and clinical depression. But even through the pain you can see all the love she has for Nallee, who has one of the most beautiful personalities you'll find. :)
We want to make this month special for them! We're working with their pastor to help get things they really need, including school uniforms for Nallee, interview clothes for Diomi as she looks for a job, and food to help them through the winter months.
If you can find it in your hearts to give one extra gift this year, whether it be money or a helpful item they can use, please send it in - our goal is to reach $3,000 worth of necessities.
Want to join us in helping Diomi and Nallee? Here are 3 ways:
  1. Give $1.00 - This money will be put towards basic necessities and care.  Maybe even a Christmas present or two (They're currently spending it alone, w/out anything at all).
  2. Give a gift card - Gift cards are extremely helpful, especially to places that are national.
  3. Donate personal products -These two need anything you can thing of in the personal product department: bathroom/kitchen/bedroom stuff, etc.
Thanks guys! You can reach the Love Drop team anytime over at: team (at) love drop (dot) us, or by checking them out at LoveDrop.us. Thanks everyone! We'll let you know how it goes!

The Versatile Blogger Award

Good Morning Divas!!!

A couple of days ago, I got a post that really warmed my heart.  As a blogger, I put a lot of time and energy into what I post. There are times when a blog post for Divas With A Purpose will hit me out of nowhere and I have to jot down notes while the thoughts are there.  I have countless posts that are half-started or half-finished (depending on which perception you'd like to use!). Divas With A Purpose is truly my passion.  It's grown from a blog to an outreach with my organization, Divas With A Purpose, Incorporated.  I say all this to say that it was truly an honor when a fellow blogger, Kalley of Blogging While Nursing, listed me among other bloggers on her site for The Versatile Blogger Award.

I truly enjoy Kalley's blog which is truly versatile! She blogs about her home life, social issues, and starts each week off with a Sunday Prayer post. Thank you, Kalley, and sending you lots of (((hugs))).

The rules for The Versatile Blogger Award:
  1. Nominate 15 fellow bloggers
  2. Inform the bloggers of their nomination
  3. Share 7 random things about yourself
  4. Thank the blogger who nominated you
  5. Add The Versatile Blogger Award pic on your blog post
Seven Random Facts About this Diva
  1. I love raw cookie dough - especially the turtle chocolate chip kind with caramel and pecans!!!
  2. I'm addicted to paying it forward and it feels so great - so many people have helped (and continue to help me) when I needed it most and least expected so I feel compelled to help others when I can
  3. I love love love crime series - Matlock, In the Heat of the Night, Law & Order, Criminal Minds - these are what clog up my TiVo box
  4. I truly cannot be around pessimistic people for extended periods of time (actually, not even a short period of time)
  5. I'm ADHD but in denial :)
  6. I love couponing and bargain shopping (but I am NOT one of those Extreme Couponing freaks!!!)
  7. My favorite color is purple and I am not a huge fan of pink. My daughter has more purple outfits than pink (even though some of my Alpha Kappa Alpha friends were highly disappointed they couldn't go on a pink shopping spree when I found out I was pregnant!)
I am nominating the following bloggers (in no particular order):

New Beginnings - This is one of the first bloggers I "connected" with and I absolutely love her spirit! She's been very supportive and is just an awesome all around person!

The Musings of T.C. Galltin - Real is the word that comes to mind when I think of TC. She's very passionate about what she believes in.  You may remember her from my blog highlighting her Domestic Violence Project.  She, also, recently published her first novel - Zaire's Place.

Pefectly Imperphect - Encouraging women to Love Themselves and embrace their pefectly imperphect selves!

Black Women Rise - She was nominated by Kalley, also, but I absolutely love her blog and is just a great person all around.  She, also, makes some great crocheted tams and newsboy style hats!!!

Dietta Girl - This is the fashion off-shoot of Black Women RIse.  Dietta talks all things fashion with a personal touch!

Susie's On The Scene - Another one of my eclectic blogger friends who's got not one, not two, but three books in the works! I truly enjoy her blog posts and appreciate getting to watch her works come together. I can't wait for one (or all of them) to be done so I can add them to my reading list!

My 2 Crazy Curls - I absolutely adore Linda-poo :) It's been awesome to see her blog take shape and take off.  She, like myself, is an avid couponer and the absolute best at entering and winning online contests (especially on Twitter).  She's taking a brief hiatus on her blog (but has promised a December giveaway!). You'll enjoy her shopping hauls and mommy reviews.

Neka T Speaks - That she most definitely does...LOL...I love Neka's positivity and her faith.  She's truly an inspiration to me and to others!

Not quite 15, but I've been slacking with my blogging lately...who can blog when looking at something like this...

Absolutely adorable, I know :)

Blogging While Nursing would have definitely been on the list, but I guess I can't nominate the person that nominated me!  Thanks again Kalley!

Be Blessed Divas :)

Protection through Education

Good Morning Divas!!!

Happy 1st of December to you all. Since being home on maternity leave, these months sure seem to be flying by. It seems like October was just here and I was bringing my little diva home to join our family.  The past 7 weeks have been full of so much love, some tears (on her part and mine...LOL), diapers, feedings, and (thankfully) not so many sleepless nights!

Being home these past couple of months have given me a chance to catch up on my daytime TV and I have to admit that I am a CNN junkie :) Perhaps it's the postpartum hormones, but much of what I see has caused me to really reflect on what type of world my children will live in when they are my age.  It's up to us to educate them and make positive impacts in their lives.  We can't leave it all up to their schools or the communities, because they will come up extremely short.

Today is World AIDS Day.  My children will most likely never know a world without AIDS - even though its a wonderful goal to work towards.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently spoke about her goal for "creating an AIDS free generation" - one where no children are born with the virus and as they grow up the risk of contracting HIV is far lower than it is today and if, by chance, they do contract the virus there will be treatment available to keep them from acquiring AIDS and passing the virus on to others.

In the 30 years that AIDS has had a name and the "fight" against it began.  In the US nearly 1 million people are living with HIV and 1 in 5 don't even know it.  There are over 16,000 AIDS related deaths annually in our country.  Those numbers are staggering to me.  The number of new cases has remained stable which I still find disturbing.  Yes, I'm glad the numbers are drastically rising, but with the focus on safe sex and AIDS awareness in our schools and communities - it seems we are quite a ways from Secretary of State Clinton's goal.

As a parent, it is my job, my responsibility to protect my children by making them aware of AIDS and what they must do to protect themselves.  In a society where sex is so prevalent among our young people, I (as well as other parents, caregivers and loved ones) have to make it a passion to protect them by educating them.  My hope is that you all do the same with those around you - in your homes, in your churches, in your communities, etc.

The first step is knowing your status and protecting yourself.  You can send a text message with your ZIP to KNOWIT (566948) or visit HIVtest.org if you need information on how to find an HIV testing center.

Be Blessed Divas!!! And remember to be a blessing to others.

Rewind: Divas With A Purpose

Below is the text from my very first post on my blog...sometimes we need a reminder of what motivated us. Enjoy and be blessed!

What is it that you stand for? When your name comes to mind, what do others think of? Is it something positive or negative? Is it what you'd want your legacy to be? Is it what you'd want your children to pass on to their children's children? If not, what are you doing to change that?

What is the point of going through life without a purpose? What are you doing to shape your destiny? What are you doing to create your legacy? Each generation to be a step ahead (or more) than the previous, what are you doing to make your strides? Are you preparing your children to take over your legacy or are you allowing them to make the same mistakes your grandparents, parents and yourself made?

In order to live a fulfilled life, you must have a purpose. You must have something that makes you get up each morning excited and ready to make a difference somehow someway. Your purpose should not be something that is selfish and just benefits you and yours. Your purpose should touch others and have a domino effect on those that they touch. It should metamorphisize into an even bigger purpose.

Believe and Receive

Today my daughter is one month old...wow! I say wow for two reasons - the fact that I have a daughter and that I'm celebrating the one month landmark of my 3rd child!

If you talked to me 3 years ago, both my husband and I would agree that we were done, kaput, finished with childbearing.  Between the two of us we had 3 bambinos - my bonus daughter and my two sons were definitely enough to keep us busy.  Add to the fact that I do not have "fun" pregnancies - preterm risks, modified bed rests, weekly doctor visits for progesterone shots, acid reflux, the list could go on and on and on.  Why, oh why, would I want to go through that again?

In September of last year, I found out I was pregnant. Which was a huge shock since I was on and had been on birth control for over 3 years.  I experienced a roller coaster of emotions - most not so positive.  Ten weeks into my pregnancy I had a miscarriage and was devastated.  After seeing an extension of me in an ultrasound and listening to their heartbeat, I truly felt a loss.  Many around me couldn't understand my feelings - heck, I couldn't understand my feelings. I just knew that I'd gotten attached to this being inside me.  My family no longer felt complete.  My biological clock went into overdrive and I had some serious discussions with God.  My faith taught me to believe that God does not make mistakes and there is a purpose and reason behind the experiences He has us go through.  My miscarriage taught me that we have to be very careful about our words and thoughts when God gives us a blessing that we may not be expecting or even want.  In the end, God has a plan and knows what is best for us.  Out of that experience, I learned how essential it is to speak and think positively because we never know what thoughts, feelings and actions we may be speaking into existence.  I find myself striving to be more positive and encouraging in my thoughts, words and actions.

When I found out I was pregnant again, I didn't even tell my husband until I was 8 weeks along and then we didn't tell anyone else until I was out of my 1st trimester.  Yes, the pregnancy was everything I expected and more, but I stayed positive (at least 97% of the time!) and could not imagine my world without this 8 pounds of love that demands (and receives) the attention of everyone in our household.

Be blessed, Divas, and remember the power of your words and thoughts in your daily walk!

My Reason for Giving

This month is often the kickoff of a season for giving and gratitude - unfortunately it often wanes right after the last bit of hoppin' john and collard greens are digested in the New Year (that's a Southern thing!).  I try to focus on being thankful and giving to others throughout the whole year and share that with my children so they can grow up doing the same.

My main reason for doing so? Because someone made sacrifices for me at some of my lowest points and intervened so that I could keep standing.  I know it was nothing by the grace of God that touched the hearts of different people throughout my life to help me in ways that they may never know how much affected me.  I made a conscious decision to pass on those blessings and help others along the way whenever I could.

I encourage you all to find some way to be a blessing to someone throughout this holiday season but to continue that way of living throughout the year.

Be Blessed Divas and remember to be a blessing to someone else!

A Month of Gratitude

For those that have followed my blog for awhile, you'll know that gratitude is a recurring theme here on Divas With A Purpose.  During the month of November, I typically focus more on gratitude and what it means to me.  I'll be doing the same this year. It often amazes me how many people choose to focus on the negative aspects of their lives rather than the numerous blessings they have surrounding them.  I made a conscious decision years ago to try my hardest not to focus on situations that I had no ability or power to change but focus on what I could control.  The things that I don't have control over I turn over to a higher power and trust that He will fix the situations as He sees fit.

I look forward to sharing and being thankful with you all this month!

Be Blessed Divas!!!  Life is so short and not promised to any of us - make sure you let your loved ones know how much they mean to you and how thankful you are to have them in your life!

Guest Post: True Friendship Stands the Test of Time

I am one of those people that just HAS to have a definition for each type of relationship in my life, so it's no wonder that I have analyzed the degree of friendships surrounding me.  My conclusion is this:  I have many associates-people that I interact with frequently, but haven't necessarily built a strong relationship with-but only a few true friends-those who are consistently with me through my ups and downs, are supportive in whatever I do, and who tell me truly when I'm right or wrong.  These are relationships that I value most.

I've learned over the years that in order to foster true friendships, there are some basic rules that need to be followed.

1.  Be a woman of your word.  If you say that you will do something (come to a party, bring a dish, hang out, return a phone call), follow through on your commitment.  Following through on your word is a testament to your character.

2.  Be open and honest.  It’s hard to be a good, true friend when you’re constantly putting up a front.  Everyone has their issues, and one of the benefits of having wonderful friends is that you can share these with people who can relate and get some advice and honest feedback.  Not only that, but just having the ability to just get things off your chest is a blessing!

3.  Always be an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on.  No matter how big or small you may perceive your friend’s problems to be, listen to her—without distractions or criticism—and always show her that you are there for her.

We all have busy lives—with spouses, children, parents, siblings, jobs, church, community outreach, and many other obligations, finding time to spend with friends can be a challenge.  Challenging yes, but not impossible.  True friends understand the busy-ness of life, and even though you may not communicate every day, these relationships can still thrive.

I’ve learned that it is not the quantity of your interactions with friends, but rather, the quality.  If you follow the basic rules of nurturing friendships, these relationships will undoubtedly stand the test of time.
