Free and Low Cost Screening Providers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a program that many may not be aware of:

National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP)

This program provides low-income, uninsured and under-served women access to screenings and diagnostic services to include:

• Clinical breast exams
• Mammograms
• Pap Tests
• Pelvic exams
• Diagnostic testing for abnormal results
• Referrals for treatment when necessary

Deaths from breast and cervical cancers can be avoided if cancer screening rates were increased among women most at risk.  Deaths occur disproportionately among women who are either uninsured or under-insured (there insurance doesn't cover the necessary tests/treatments).

All women are at risk, but regular screenings can prevent or detect breast and cervical cancer early.  Screening guidelines have been established but you should definitely discuss with your health care provider if you should be tested earlier or more frequently based on your health and family history.

You may be eligible for free or low-cost screenings if you meet the following guidelines:

• You are between 40-64 years of age for breast cancer screening
• You are between 18-64 years of age for cervical cancer screening
• You have no insurance or your insurance does not cover screening exams
• Your yearly income is at or below 250% of the federal poverty level
