SOCS: Coming Home

stream of consciousness Sunday
Today's Prompt:

How do you feel about where you live?

I absolutely detest moving.  I lived in the same place, same town, same friends, family right down the street for the first 15 years of my life.  Enter a base closure and my life was turned upside down.  My dad found a job half way (literally) across the country and suddenly we were surrounded by moving boxes and men.  I'll never forget that farewell at the airport when my aunts took my mom, myself and little sisters. There were plenty of tears.  In hindsight, our years in Texas were pretty good.  They brought my immediate family closer together because we were all we knew.  We got more involved in the church.  My church family became our extended family.  A wonderful group of people that I still keep in touch with 15 plus years later.

When my husband and I first got married he had orders to Washington state.  I was very apprehensive.  The thought of leaving my second home and moving even further away from my first home (this time we'd really be across the country!) took some getting used to.  I'm not ashamed to admit I was very relieved when he found out they were changing his duty station because the unit he was being assigned to was preparing to deploy.  Since we'd just been through 4 deployments literally back-to-back, the powers that be decided to give him a little break and assign him to a training base.  I WAS COMING HOME!!!!

Being able to raise my kids around immediate family means so much to me. They have cousins and aunts a plenty.  They get to know their grandparents and great-parents.

We purchased our first home last year and I feel settled and content for the first time in a very long time.  This place is ours.  There's a little piece of us all in the walls and halls of this home.  Some months we struggle, but it's all worth it to me to give my children the stability and memories that I hold on to when I think of where I spent the first 15 years of my life.
