Last weekend I was traveling home and "I Remember Mama" by Shirley Caesar came on the radio. I've listened to that song numerous times and it's always been a favorite of mine, but for some reason I got especially emotional listening to it.
I thought of all the sacrifices my mother has made for me and my younger sisters that often go unnoticed and unappreciated.
I thought of the prayers and tears she's lifted up for us.
I thought about the unconditional love she has and even though she's the disciplinarian in our family - she's, also, our biggest cheerleader, motivator, defender and protector (even as adults).
I thought about how much joy she gets spending time with her grandkids. When I see her cuddling with my daughter or laughing and hugging my sons - I get brief glance on how she interacted with me as a baby. It warms my heart that my kids get an opportunity to spend quality time with their grandmother that they'll be able to remember.
That made me think of my grandmother who passed away 6 years ago. She was a second mother to me. She was who dried my tears when my mother disciplined me and my feelings got hurt. She spoiled me rotten (cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner because that's what I wanted).
I treasure those memories and hold them close to my heart. Something I pray my children will do with the memories they are creating with their grandmother.
